Making Waves – Russia’s game-changing underwater nuclear weapon

The Poseidon 2M39 torpedo, the "Doomsday Nuke", is an asymmetric answer to US defense shields, early warning systems and nuclear deterrent

You’d be forgiven for thinking that man has exceeded himself in imagining and creating fiendish munitions to destroy enemies en masse, and that he couldn’t possibly come up with anything worse than Nukes, pandemic-causing biological and population-decimating chemical weapons.

The bar was set low, but the Russians have lowered it yet further.  The Poseidon nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed Unmanned Underwater Vehicle, developed by Rubin Design Bureau, is a summary lesson in diabolical thinking.  This autonomous torpedo with a reported 10,000 km range carries a 2-100 megaton nuclear payload to the littorals of enemy nations.  Evading detection in undersea trenches and hugging the seabed, it sneaks past picket lines and detonates off the coast to create a huge, irradiated tsunami which devastates vast swathes of land and renders it uninhabitable for generations.
